Pais Des Ilinois translates to
ILLINOIS COUNTRY. Beginning in 1534, and
for 229 years thereafter, France colonized and governed the area comprising modern day Illinois. However, in 1763 France ceded the region to Great Britain as part of a worldwide remodeling of colonial territories decreed by the
Treaty of Paris. Great Britain ruled Illinois for only 13 years, losing the territory to the North American Colonies which, on July 4, 1776, declared themselves to be the independent United States of America.
